As Mayor of Thessaloniki (2011–2019), Boutaris made a profound impact by bringing the city’s layered history into the spotlight. He placed special emphasis on its Jewish, Ottoman, and Roman roots, fostering awareness of a past that had long been overlooked. The establishment of the Holocaust Museum, which he described as a “milestone for the centuries to come,” stands as one of his greatest achievements – a symbol of remembrance and international recognition.
In discussions with representatives of ArtExpert and Art Thessaloniki - Helexpo, Boutaris revealed his visionary perspective. He saw art not merely as an expression of cultural creation but as a driving force for societal change and economic development. Initiatives such as the Thessaloniki Film Festival, the promotion of contemporary art, and strategic collaborations with artists and institutions reflected his ambition to establish Thessaloniki as a global hub for art and culture.
Boutaris’ political influence extended well beyond the cultural sphere. He was a tireless advocate for improved relations with Greece’s neighbours, particularly Turkey and North Macedonia. His clear stance on the naming dispute with North Macedonia provoked the ire of nationalist groups, yet he remained steadfast in his belief that dialogue and understanding are the cornerstones of a united European future. He was also deeply committed to German-Greek collaboration. During his tenure, Thessaloniki forged twin-city partnerships with Cologne and Leipzig, and the German-Greek Youth Office was established – testament to his unwavering faith in the power of international cooperation. Boutaris embodied the rare ability to unite vision with pragmatism. In his plans for Thessaloniki, he seamlessly blended respect for the past with a resolute focus on the future.
While viticulture, particularly the founding of the Kir-Yianni wineries, was an important chapter of his life, his true passion lay in the promotion of art, culture, and social openness.
Through his work, Yiannis Boutaris transformed Thessaloniki into a city more conscious of its history and better prepared for its future. His legacy endures – as a beacon of tolerance, cultural diversity, and bold vision.
With profound sorrow, we bid farewell to Giannis Boutaris. May he rest in peace.
